Julie May (b.2000) is a print-based artist. Graduated from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, her practice subverts social expectation and cultural convention around identity and artistic production. She is currently a resident artist working at the Hong Kong Open Printshop.

 

Often using raw materials in her work, she seeks to articulate the enduring relationships within body politics. May draws inspiration from her own classical view on femininity, including womanhood and sexuality, to cultivate the complexity of ‘self’. Through the mark-making nature of print, she incorporates ‘otherness’ as an artistic strategy to reinforce undermined notions such as legacy and courage. May’s experimental approach encourages reconsideration of ourselves, in this peculiar life.
